He hailed from Madison, in Jefferson County, Indiana, and was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, serving from August 1, 1942 to March 18, 1946 in Europe. In 1962, his name appeared in a court document describing his testimony in the murder trial of an Air Force member accused of killing his wife and mentions that Bob had been the Director of Security and Law Enforcement in the Air University at Maxwell Field, in Montgomery Alabama, since 1959.
